About the Author

H.C. is an adventurous young author from North Cornwall, U.K., with a big imagination and a love of storytelling. She is also the great niece of our founder, Hammy Hamster.

H began writing shortly after turning seven. Her second book, A Friend in the Dark, was inspired by her love of bats and her desire to share the importance of friendship. This follows her debut title, Frosty Friends. Both books were illustrated by her mum and published in time for Christmas 2024.

H is currently working on her third book, with hopes for publication in Spring 2026.

Her books have been enjoyed by readers all over the world, including customers in Australia and Canada.

When she’s not writing, H loves spending time with her family, going to Brownies, and building Lego creations.

About the Book

A Friend in the Dark is a heart-warming children's book about finding friendship when you least expect it.

Betty is a bat who spends her nights flying through the forest alone. She’s different from the other animals, with sharp fangs and large ears, which makes the other creatures wary of her. Until one night, she hears a strange noise coming from the forest floor. There, she meets Florence, a lonely hedgehog with prickly spines who has no friends either.

The two misfits quickly bond over their shared sense of loneliness, and soon, they’re off on exciting adventures, from hunting for forgotten picnic treasures to sneaking into a squirrel’s stash of winter food. Through their fun and laughter, Betty and Florence learn that true friendship isn’t about looks – it’s about kindness, understanding, and accepting one another for who you are.
